REFORMATION OF A PUBLIC GREEN AREA IN FILOTHEI, ATHENS

HONORABLE MENTION for the architectural competition “KARAMPASIS” in Athens, Greece

Design :Elina Drossou
Collaborators: Malandraki Efi, Karkatselas Nikos

Bringing to prominence the area of the study in the existent natural and residential environment is suggested to take place by;

-Organizing the accessibility, by defining the land naturally and artificially, and by turning the part of Louki Akrita Street that borders with the land into a pedestrian precinct.

-Mapping out routes (free and linear tracks made by stone and concrete) and creation of mild constructions (wooden prismatic surfaces, trellis bending into sittings), compatible with the character of the area.

-Introducing water.

-Maintaining and enriching the natural anaglyph.

-Conducting tools such as orientation, natural and artificial lighting, planting trees, in order to meet the needs for sunlight ,shadow and lighting .

Accessibility to the area is organized by the demarcation of four entrances on the contiguous streets; access from the side of Kapodistriou Avenue will be precluded by the creation of a natural and artificial dam. The natural dam, one new embankment of 2.50 m., lengthwise to Kapodistriou Street, will act supplementary to maintaining the existing planted embankment lengthwise to L.Akrita Street, in order to meet the needs for reinforcement of the existing plantation and protection by the noise. Those two natural reformations create an, all-closed by hypsometrical curves, protected environment, which can “embrace” various activities –such as resting, walking, playing- by the minimum artificial intervention. Planting new trees will include species that are part of the existing diversity in Filothei, need little care and can positively react to the micro-climate of the area. All these above, are supposed to re-establish a relationship between the residents of Filothei and their environment; a relationship that will go beyond the visual experience, to a more essential, experiential approach to the space.
